The Coop

So, we started the chicken coop planning almost immediately after moving in. In fact, when our Realtor asked us what we wanted in our next home we said, “Chickens!”

We researched different coop designs for weeks, and came across tons of great plans. Saying that, we are very new to being chicken parents, so we were worried about predators (we have wild hogs, raccoons and lots of other things going bump in the night). In the end we decided to build a run and buy a well-built coop.

So, we are in week two of working on our run, and it looks like the below – Rocky seems to like it so far!

We are using hardware cloth for the screen, and screwing it into the posts and frames. (You can get the cloth way cheaper on Amazon than Lowe’s – I’ll add links later).

The coop is from Leonard’s – out of all of the coops we viewed, this one was more than we were planning to spend, but the construction quality was also much better. Now that we have started building our own run I think we would have the courage to build a coop one day, but with all of the tasks on the to do list I don’t think we could have done it now.

We used Sacrete quick-set no mix concrete for the posts, and made sure to angle the coop so that ware will flow off to the back, and thus towards the creek below.

We plan to put a picnic table down by the creek, and have planted a Dogwood tree we were gifted when we moved in. I love the story of the Dogwood, and it was a really special gift.

I am posting this from my phone (our internet is not yet installed – that’s a long story, but we should have strong internet in the next month or two).

If you have ideas, feedback, or comments, would love to hear!
